September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Each year, organizations and individuals across our nation work tirelessly to raise awareness of and focus on preventing suicide. Among those most at risk are our military members, our veterans, and their families. In Delaware, we're blessed to have a community that is highly supportive of our military and our veterans, but we still suffer from the same challenges as the rest of the country. So, if you want to get involved, if you want to learn more, there are many opportunities this month. In particular, scores of Delawareans will gather on Sept. 28 at Vet Fest in the new Town of Whitehall to show their gratitude and learn more about supporting our military and their families. Vet Fest includes a 5K run, a 10K ruck, a family walk, a parade, and a music festival. If you're in Delaware, I'm sure they'd love to see you there. If you're elsewhere, I encourage you to join hands with Delaware to bring light where it is needed the most. Two very engaged organizations, the nonprofit Stop Soldier Suicide and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will have outreach teams at VetFest. They'll be there to lend support, share resources, and answer questions about health care and mental health resources for our service members and our veterans. To learn more about Stop Soldier Suicide, the organizer of Vet Fest, please visit their website at StopSoldierSuicide.org. Regarding the Department of Veterans Affairs, its Veterans Crisis Line is open 24/7 and available at 1-800-273-8255. Individuals in crisis can also send a text to 838255 or live chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net. That crisis line and its website are staffed by caring, qualified responders, many of whom are veterans. So, let's join together and raise awareness, share resources, and work to bring an end to suicide in our communities.
