http://coons.senate.gov | U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) joined civil rights hero and Congressman John Lewis on a pilgrimage to see first-hand some of the most important civil rights landmarks in our nation's history. On their trip across Alabama, Senator Coons met Ruby Bridges. As an exceptionally courageous six-year-old in 1960, Ruby became the first black student in Louisiana to attend an all-white elementary school. Ruby's story is a central part of the history of civil rights in the United States, and her bravery is preserved in a painting by Normal Rockwell that President Obama hung in the White House. By meeting heroes like Ruby who helped move forward our nation's march toward justice and equality, Senator Coons had the opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, and how far we have left to go before we complete that journey.
