WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today spoke about legislation that he co-sponsored, entitled The Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Improvement Act, which was passed by the Committee.

“This legislation ensures that we honor and fulfill our promise to take care of the husbands, wives, sons, and daughters whose loved ones were killed or permanently disabled protecting us. This bill will improve the program by adding transparency, collecting more data about the PSOB program, and reporting that information to Congress. It will also give greater weight to the determinations of state and local agencies that investigate an incident and assess an officer’s cause of death or injury. It is my hope that these improved procedures will expedite the payment of qualified claims so families who have sacrificed so much receive their benefits more quickly.

“It is critical that we do all that we can to help public safety officers and their families through the PSOB program. This bipartisan bill will support this important program and honor those who give so much for our safety.”
