Senator Coons’ statement on U.S. strikes in Syria
U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement.
“On one hand, I’m encouraged to see the Administration send a clear message that President Assad’s murder of his own people with chemical weapons will not be tolerated. On the other, last night’s strikes directed by President Trump do not appear to be based on a comprehensive strategy for dealing with the many sides of the conflict in Syria.
“I urge President Trump to explain his objectives in Syria to Congress and the American people. Should the achievement of those goals require additional US military action, the President must seek congressional authorization for the use of military force against the Assad regime.”
