WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) issued the following the statement after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's address to Congress today.

“Our nation’s relationship with the Afghan government deeply affects our broader interests in South and Central Asia and around the world, so I was encouraged this morning by President Ghani’s strong commitment to our countries’ continued collaboration.  The United States has sacrificed a tremendous amount to ensure Afghanistan has a government worthy of the Afghan people and is no longer a safe haven for terrorists. Those sacrifices must now be followed by a continued commitment to a stable, democratic Afghanistan, and President Ghani appears ready to be our partner in that commitment.

“In his remarks, President Ghani outlined an important change of direction from the previous regime, emphasizing stability, reform, and true partnership with the United States. That partnership is critical, and as we maintain our troop presence in Afghanistan this year, I will continue to seek and support strategies that serve American interests.”
