WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) released the following statement after The Washington Post reported this morning that Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) are “crafting new measures to address everything from Iran’s recent ballistic missile tests to the country’s human rights violations to a reauthorization of the soon-expiring Iran Sanctions Act (ISA).”
“Like Senators Corker and Menendez, I’m very concerned about Iran’s continued UN Security Council violations, its ballistic missile program, its support for terrorism, and its human rights abuses,” said Senator Coons, a member of the SFRC. “I’m eager to see exact language from my colleagues, but in principle, I certainly support their efforts to show Iran that we are not going to tolerate its bad behavior. We need to strictly enforce both the nuclear agreement and the other sanctions against Iran that remain in place, and we need to have credible, precise sanctions to ‘snap back’ to should Iran violate the nuclear agreement.”
