WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and co-author of the bipartisan Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, released the following statement on President Trump’s and his attorney, Rudy Giuliani’s, latest attacks on Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation.

“The Special Counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in our democracy is not a partisan exercise. It is, without question, a non-partisan effort to defend every American – Republican, Democrat or otherwise – from a hostile foreign power’s efforts to rob them of their rights as American citizens and attack our country,” said Senator Coons.  “The statements from President Trump and his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, who have called the Special Counsel investigation a ‘witch hunt’ and claimed that the FBI and the Department of Justice are trying to ‘frame’ the President are not only inaccurate, they are corrosive to our democracy and the rule of law.

“After one year of work, the Special Counsel has indicted 19 individuals and three companies of serious crimes.  Five people have already pled guilty. This is not a witch hunt; it is the American rule of law in action.  I urge the President and his aides and lawyers to stop trying to discredit, interfere with, or remove the Special Counsel.  Their efforts will not and must not succeed.”
