WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) issued the following statement on attending the inauguration of President-elect Trump:

“In countries around the world, including many which claim to be democracies, there is neither a guarantee of free and fair elections nor an expectation of a peaceful transfer from one elected leader to another. No matter how divisive our elections, the world looks to the United States every four years to see that democracy still works in our country.

"I will be attending President-elect Trump’s inauguration today to honor our nation's democratic process and to support the peaceful transfer of power.  Today is a day for all Americans, regardless of their politics, to come together in respect and appreciation for our Constitution, our democracy, and our unique American traditions."
