WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) today issued the following statement to commemorate Women’s History Month, observed this March:

“Nearly 91 years have passed since women won the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, but it’s inconceivable that there was ever a time when that right was not inherent. The scope of the contribution made by women to American society exceeds any scale of measurement.

“We pause this month to remember the heroic work of women who came before, but we must be mindful that there remains work to be done. I believe strongly that my 9-year-old daughter deserves to grow up in a nation where she has the same rights and opportunities as my sons.

“Delaware has a long history of leadership from trailblazing women, like my friend Muriel Gilman of Wilmington, who passed away last week and whose life was celebrated by friends and family today. Muriel was a pioneer for working women, starting in the early 1960s when she began her work as the first professional woman at the United Way of Delaware. She served for 23 years, retiring as its executive vice president and helping pave the way for other working women.

“As we strive to form a more perfect union, we must remain committed to the cause of equality, indifferent to race, income, sexual orientation, and indeed, sex.”
