WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) on Friday released the following statement about news that the nation’s unemployment rate had fallen to 8.9 percent in February after 192,000 new jobs were added to the economy. The unemployment rate in Delaware held steady at 8.5 percent in January.
“What we’re seeing is an economy that is clearly in recovery. Last month’s national jobs numbers are a welcome sign of progress I’m optimistic we’ll see in Delaware when its February numbers come out – that the economic policies put in place by President Obama and the Democratic Congress over the last two years are working. Entrepreneurs are investing in their businesses and putting more Americans to work.“
“Make no mistake: there is considerably more work to do to keep our economy moving in this positive direction. Congress should remain focused on measures that help create jobs and make it easier for businesses to grow. The House Republicans’ budget proposal, on which the Senate is expected to vote on Tuesday, would cost 700,000 jobs across the U.S., including a projected 2,200 jobs in Delaware. Now is not the time to make reckless and indiscriminate cuts that put the nation’s economic recovery at risk.”
