Sen. Coons hosted Sen. Whitehouse (D-RI) in Delaware centered around two themes related to climate change: sea level rise/resiliency and red knots/horseshoe crabs. Sens. Coons and Whitehouse began the day with a visit to Delaware’s National Park at the Brandywine River, where they engaged in citizen science collecting and counting various animal species. They continued on to and visited Wilmington’s Southbridge neighborhood, one of Delaware’s lowest lying neighborhoods – and met with DNREC staff about planned wetlands park to relieve flooding. From there, they traveled south to Port Mahon to see the red knot birds, and then to Prime Hook National Wildlife Reserve to see the breaches and repaired shoreline and marshes beach replenishment project, and concluded with a horseshoe count at Cape Henlopen State Park.
