Women’s Rights

For 300 years, our nation has expanded the scope of justice, the definition of equality, and our access to opportunity.

Senator Coons has spent his Senate career working to continue that tradition. He knows that diversity makes our companies stronger, it makes our schools stronger, and it makes our country stronger.

From fair pay to reproductive rights, Senator Coons is fighting each day to make gender equality a reality.

I will not stop fighting for equality until it’s guaranteed in every way, in every state, for all Americans.

We still have a way to go. Women in Delaware still only earn 87% of what men do. Senator Coons supports the Paycheck Fairness Act to help close that gap. That would mean more money in families’ pockets and a stronger economy.

Women should not fear being pregnant in America. That’s why Senator Coons is fighting for better maternal health care to make childbirth safer for all. He is fighting to restore and protect reproductive freedom including access to abortion, birth control, and fertility treatments so women can make the decisions that are best for them, their families, and their health.

Too many women in this country live in the shadow of domestic violence. Senator Coons has twice helped pass updated versions of the Violence Against Women Act – giving women and law enforcement the support they need. Senator Coons believes that women’s rights shouldn’t end at our borders. He’s also working for women around the world who deserve the same freedoms as their husbands, brothers, and sons.

Some of Senator Coons’ accomplishments for women include:
  • Senator Coons is a champion for women’s access to abortion care – with national reproductive rights groups ranking his voting record as 100% pro-choice. He is fighting for the Right to Contraception Act and the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act, which would guarantee access to contraception and put the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law.
  • Senator Coons has used his position as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee to demand that the Supreme Court protect every woman’s right to lifesaving emergency medical care and to push for laws that ensure all women have the power to make their own choices about their bodies. He has also worked to bring the voices of women from across the country to Washington to shine a light on the devastating impact of the Supreme Court’s elimination of the right to abortion.
  • Senator Coons stands with the thousands of women in Delaware who report domestic abuse each year and has twice worked to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. He wrote a new provision that became law to protect more women by alerting local law enforcement when someone who is ineligible to purchase a gun due to previous incidents of domestic violence tries to buy one.
  • Senator Coons wants to make sure every Delawarean can start or grow their family if they want to. That’s why he is pushing for the Protect IVF Act and the Access to Fertility Treatment and Care Act, which would make fertility treatments more affordable and guarantee a federal right to IVF for families that want it.
  • Senator Coons knows women’s rights don’t stop at our shores. He defends the rights of women across the world. He has supported the Global HER Act, which would make it so that there are more non-profits to provide desperately needed health care to women, no matter where they live.
