National Service

After helping launch one of our nation’s first AmeriCorps programs, Senator Coons understands the amazing impact service can have on those who serve, their communities, and society.

He credits his own national service with setting him on the path towards New Castle County government and eventually the United States Senate. He believes that every American should be given the opportunity to serve, whether in our military, our national guard, AmeriCorps, or other organizations. As Co-Chair of the bipartisan National Service Congressional Caucus, he works with Democrats and Republicans to make that possible.

The best thing we can do for our nation is to commit to each other through service…Americans have always been defined by a generosity of spirit and a willingness to help our communities. In our state of neighbors, thousands of Delawareans work every day to follow the greatest calling: to love your neighbor as yourself.

He supports service programs not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because they’re also sound investments. For every dollar the federal government spends on AmeriCorps, as many as $17 return to our communities in economic impact, skills training, and public services. Volunteers and AmeriCorps members make our neighborhoods and towns more resilient and less reliant on government resources. That means we are more prepared for any disaster and will recover from them more quickly.

Some of Senator Coons’ accomplishments on national service include:
  • Senator Coons is Co-Chair of the bipartisan National Service Caucus, working across the aisle to expand civilian and military opportunities for service.
  • In response to the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, Senator Coons led the historic expansion of national service programs. As part of the American Rescue Plan Act, he created Public Health AmeriCorps to give thousands of young people the opportunity to help communities recover from the pandemic – finding ways to restore the health of the people living there and keep them healthy in the long run.
  • Senator Coons introduced legislation that led to the creation of President Biden’s Civilian Climate Corps. The corps creates paid opportunities for people all across the country to get them back to work and help the most vulnerable communities prepare for the impacts of climate change, preserve public lands, and replace infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
  • Senator Coons secured funding to expand the Delaware Branches to Chances program, which trains struggling and formerly incarcerated people in the landscaping business so they can find good jobs and get back on their feet.
