WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling significantly limiting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by striking down Louisiana’s congressional map:
“Generations of Americans marched, served, protested, and died for the promise of our democracy. Today, the Supreme Court continues its steady march to forget that sacrifice and undo that promise. By restricting Americans’ ability to choose candidates that represent their communities, the Supreme Court has told the nation that some voices and votes are worth less than others.
“The Voting Rights Act was a declaration that our democracy belongs to all of us. That idea is under attack in the courts, where this case will limit opportunities for minority voters to select the candidates of their choice; in Congress, where Republicans are hell-bent on forcing through the SAVE America Act, which will restrict voting by mail and throw our elections into chaos; in the White House, where President Trump is trying to unilaterally take over elections in defiance of our Constitution; and in the states, where legislatures across the country are enacting laws that will make it harder for many citizens to vote.
“I still believe in the promise of our democracy, and I will keep fighting to make it real and to make sure your voice and vote matter.”
Senator Coons is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
