Senators Coons, Toomey, applaud Attorney General Sessions order to enforce existing gun laws

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Pat Toomey (R-PA), released a joint statement regarding Attorney General Jeff Sessions directing all U.S. Attorneys to more vigorously enforce existing gun laws against individuals who are legally barred from owning a gun but “lie and try” to buy one. Unfortunately, federal prosecutors rarely prosecute any of these cases.

“We are pleased that Attorney General Sessions is directing all U.S. Attorneys to more vigorously enforce existing gun laws against individuals who are legally barred from owning a gun but “lie and try” to buy one. Unfortunately, federal prosecutors rarely pursue these cases.

“Attorney General Sessions’ decision is a welcome first step, but Congress should take the next step by enacting the Toomey-Coons NICS Denial Notification Act, which requires federal authorities to alert states within 24 hours when prohibited individuals "lie and try" to purchase firearms. This common-sense legislation provides state law enforcement with critical information they can use to decide whether to investigate and prosecute these individuals under state laws.”
