WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) today released the following statement on the death of former Libyan leader Moammar Qadaffi.

“This is an historic day for the people of Libya and all those committed to building a world free of the type of tyranny that Moammar Qadaffi imposed. The Libyan people rose up to liberate their country and lay the groundwork for a brighter future that is more stable, more secure, and more just. It is my hope that the Libyan people will use this a opportunity to form a real, multi-party democracy. America’s involvement in this achievement was measured, modest, and responsible — proof that a smart, supporting role in a focused multilateral effort can be effective in protecting innocent civilians and stabilizing dangerous regions."

Senator Coons is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
