WILMINGTON, Del. – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump administration is considering withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

“I am deeply concerned by reports that the Trump administration is threatening our long-held position as a global leader in the fight against climate change by withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate change agreement. This misguided action, combined with recent steps backward on the Clean Power Plan, vehicle fuel economy standards, and clean air regulations, suggest an intention to systematically undermine our commitments to fight climate change and embrace a clean energy future. Leaving this agreement would signal that the United States intends to remain on the sidelines while the rest of the world works to combat climate change. Whether or not the administration chooses to remain in the Paris agreement, I am committed to supporting clean energy research and defending our global scientific leadership so that Americans remain competitive, prosperous, and secure.”
