WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

“This Supreme Court vacancy is among the most consequential of my lifetime. The next Supreme Court justice will likely make decisions with far reaching consequences, including on privacy, healthcare, immigration, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, campaign finance, criminal justice, and environmental protection,” said Senator Coons.

“The Supreme Court has played a key role in important advances towards our having a more just and inclusive society. I am profoundly concerned that President Trump will nominate a candidate who would roll back that progress, including core parts of Justice Kennedy’s legacy.

“In just the past few weeks, as the Supreme Court has issued decisions on voting rights, taxes, privacy, labor rights, executive power, and police searches, we’ve seen as clearly as ever that our courts matter in the lives of every American. I will exercise my role as a Senator and Judiciary Committee member to stand up for the rights and liberties of Americans against efforts to reverse the precedents that protect them.”
