WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) joined Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Mark Begich (D-Alaska) at a press conference with veterans struggling to find work, veterans service organizations, and employers to discuss aggressive new legislation to address rising unemployment among our nation’s veterans. Senator Coons is an original cosponsor of the Hire America’s Heroes Act — the first bill of its kind to require broad job skills training for all service members returning home and comes at a time when more than one in four veterans aged 18-24 is unemployed. In addition to providing new job skills training to all service members, the bill will also improve direct federal hiring so that more service members have jobs waiting for them the day they leave the military.
